Enrico is a fault resolution expert at a major electrical utility. He faces a common challenge: after replacing a faulty switch box in the city, he needs to file a report. He pulls out his new mobile post-work reporting app, relieved to avoid the complexities of SAP. However, he finds himself overwhelmed by an extensive list of 2,000 fault codes. Death by scrolling. Overwhelmed, he resorts to labelling the issue as a "General Fault," thinking that the main objective is fixing the fault, and “General Fault” is not wrong.
Meanwhile, Heidi, a reliability engineer at the central office, notices a puzzling trend: numerous "General Fault" reports for switch boxes citywide. The lack of specific data hinders her ability to find a pattern or underlying cause of the reliability problem.
Why now?
Several recent technologies are converging to make it possible to improve this common problem:
- Mobile Integration: The rise of mobile technology has given field staff real-time data access and connectivity, essential for AI-assisted solutions.
- Advanced Speech-to-Text: Speech to text solutions are becoming so accurate, it’s now possible to just say field names without needing to scroll or search.
- Natural Language Processing (NLP): High-quality NLP, combined with advanced mobile technology and accurate transcription, provides a robust solution for semantic matching; meaning, we can match the intent of what was said, and do not need to rely on an exact match.
- Large Language Models (LLMs): LLMs, like GPT4, enhance traditional NLP capabilities. They can interpret user intent, even when the user uses different wording or just provides a general description.
How does it work?
The process is straightforward:
- A worker, like Enrico, uses their mobile device to open a form and speaks the name of an asset or a fault code.
- The AI-powered list matcher identifies even partial matches of long asset IDs. If the worker gives a work summary without specific codes, the system suggests the most appropriate code.
- In cases of uncertainty, the system presents the top-5 matches, allowing the worker to make the final decision. This eliminates the need to navigate through extensive lists, streamlining the reporting process.
- The outcome is improved data quality, providing planners with accurate and detailed information for better decision-making.
Challenges Remain
Despite these advancements, a few challenges remain:
- Connectivity Requirements: While NLP can function offline, current LLMs require reliable Internet access.
- Digital Infrastructure and Integration: For optimal contextual understanding, organizations must have already invested in digitizing their data. The AI vendor then needs to integrate with organizations' systems to provide the solution.
By improving something as seemingly innocuous as list matching with AI, we are not just simplifying the reporting process. The innocuous improvement ensuring that workers like Enrico can accurately document their work, and that significantly improves data quality and thereby empowers reliability professionals like Heidi with the detailed information needed to optimise the business.
